About:

Katherine (Kat) Coyl is a seasoned theatre professional with over 20 years of experience. They started their career at the age of 13 with the Musical Dance Troupe "Good Vibes."

Kat holds a bachelor's degree in fine arts from the CCPA at Roosevelt University and a Graduate Certification in Intimacy Direction and Coordination from Columbia College. Kat is also an Advanced Actor Combatant with the SAFD and a recognized Certified Teacher and Fight Director with the ILFDC.

In addition to spending ten seasons as an Actor at Lyric Opera Chicago, Kat has worked as a choreographer nationally on Opera and Theatre productions, including Hindsight (Intimacy and Fight Director) at Chicago Fringe Opera, Lenora (Intimacy and Fight Director) at Chicago Opera Theater, Breaking the Waves (Assistant Director and Intimacy Coordinator) at Detroit Opera; The Nose (Intimacy and Fight Director) at Chicago Opera Theater; Memoirs of Jazz in the Alley (Intimacy Director) at South Chicago Dance Theatre; The Life and Death(s) of Alan Turning (Intimacy and Fight Director) at Chicago Opera Theater; and Athena at Urbanite Theatre. Most recently, Kat made their debut as a staging director for the 2025 Ear Taxi Festival directing an excerpt from Kate Soper’s HERE BE SIRENS.

Apart from their career as a performer and choreographer, Kat has taught movement with a strong focus on acting at National workshops, Resident Artist Programs, local outreach, University of Iowa, Roosevelt University, and DePaul University.

Kat is passionate about collaborating and creating supportive spaces for all artists, empowering them to deliver their best work.

Kat currently holds the position of the president of the International League of Fight Directors and Choreographers. They a member of the American Guild of Musical Artists and a proud member of the Latinx/Hispanic and Queer communities.
